David O. Hinton, Captain, US Public Health Service and EPA (Retired) is founder and director of The Purple Elephant Computer Factory for Kids

The Purple Elephant Computer Factory for KIDS! is focused on computer reuse. They accept donated computers, refurbish them, install a new Windows XP image with additional software, and make them available to ALL KIDS ... disadvantaged, at-risk, military ... and other individuals through requests and referrals.

The computers at the Purple Elephant are typically 2 to 3 years old, state-of-the-art until recently, but now rejected by local businesses that need to upgrade their computers to keep up with new technology.

Purple Elephant have rebuilt nearly 2,000 machines that were donated by area businesses and local residents. The computers have gone to special-needs children, foster children, Vietnamese immigrants, and to children as far away as Africa and South America.
Their mission is to bridge the educational and rehabilitative needs of children, and adults, by placing computer technology directly into the home by providing refurbished and Internet-ready personal computers to kids of all ages.

They hope to: reduce the high school dropout rate through in-home computer technology, increase end-of-grade test scores through in-home computer technology, use in-home computers as a tool to discourage gang participation, connect families with deployed active duty parents via the internet, and to reduce the recidivism rate of ex-offenders through personal access to computer technology.
